How to Cast on a Sock
- 1). Cast all the stitches tightly onto one of the DPNs. For socks that start with ribbing, use a knitted cast on. Begin with a slip knot and hang it on the needle. This will count as your first stitch.
- 2). Insert another DPN into the slipknot from front to back and left to right, just as you would to knit a regular stitch. Wrap the inserted needle and pull it through --- again, just like regular knitting. Pull the wrapped stitch toward you to lengthen it, twist it 180 degrees, and hang it on the same needle as the slipknot. Cast on the rest of the stitches in the same manner.
- 3). Divide the number of stitches by three. If it is not exactly divisible, add the extra stitch or two onto the last number. For example, if your cast on was 28 stitches, you would divide them into groups of seven, seven and eight stitches.
- 4). Slip the first group of stitches knit-wise onto a second DPN. The stitches will hold the needle in place so you can let go of it after you slip them.
- 5). Slip the second group of stitches onto a second DPN. Leave the first group on the first needle.
- 6). Arrange the needles in a triangle shape, making sure none are twisted. You are ready to knit the first group of stitches onto the fourth DPN.
