The act of quitting smoking is really no different than anything else you've ever wanted - you need to have a plan of action that'll define all the smaller steps or goals that'll eventually lead to that end goal of being able to totally kick the habit permanently.

The act of writing down the reasons why a smoker is quitting and what are all the minor steps or milestones required to reach and therefore exceed to be able to get to that final and most important goal of all can be of huge importance.

Just be sure to make your goals realistic, but not too simple either - challenging and achievable is the way to do it.

Be fully and unswervingly dedicated to your defined plan and be sure to reward yourself for pushing through each milestone, even if it's solely a pat on your own back - you'll deserve it!
