The Thrill of the Audition Is Only the Start
New Movie Auditions can be scary yet exhilarating can't they? People work all day at a factory or bartend/wait tables at a restaurant, and then whammo, the call for the audition comes; they go and ace it, and presto, Johnny or Susie become a working actor! Fame and fortune are right around the corner, right? Not necessarily.
The first working gig can be the last if the actor isn't properly motivated to succeed.
They must have a good agent and a defined path in which they intend to pursue.
Some are intent on becoming the next Cary Grant, but are ultimately destined to become Jim Hampton the character actor.
They must be willing to evolve into what best suits them.
A great agent will assess the actor's abilities and steer them in the right direction, along with the actor's mindset and own intentions, a common ground will arise (or fall depending on the relationship), and a career will be made.
So, choose your agent wisely and vice versa.
How many times has an actor been chosen for a movie role, and it sounds great on paper, only to crash and burn and receive horrendous reviews from the critics? Too many times to mention.
Sometimes he/she is too strong a presence for the role when an unknown would have been so much better.
Sometimes the other case is true.
Can you imagine any other Jack Sparrow than Johnny Depp? Could anyone else have been the lead in Raiders of the Lost Ark other than Harrison Ford? This list can go on and on, as lead actors became and assume the roles of their lives.
But it really came down to the agent and movie casting to come to the agreement and arrangement.
Also it came down to the choices that were made early on in the career path that enabled them to capitalise on the future project.
So being ready for the audition means being fully prepared and researching the character in which you are given to audition for.
Moreover the actor must be prepared to immerse them self yet still remain true to who they are.
This is not an easy task and there are hundreds of classes out there that try and bring this out in the actor.
The agent must be aware and really know his client along the way.
After that, the projects will come and no matter what, have fun!
