How to Transfer Programs & Data to a New PC

8
    • 1). Launch the "Windows Easy Transfer Wizard" or the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard." Depending on which version of Windows you have, the wizard is located in different places. For example, in Windows 7 and Vista, the wizard is located in the Control Panel, while on Windows XP it can be found under System Tools, which can be found by clicking the "Start Menu," then "All Programs," then "Accessories." Inside the wizard, you will have several transfer methods from which to choose.

    • 2). Use a USB Easy Transfer cable for a direct connection to copy files between your PCs. Connect the Easy Transfer cable between a USB port on your old PC and a USB port on the new one. Use the Transfer Wizard to establish the connection between your PC, and also to select which files to transfer.

    • 3). Transfer your files over a network using the Easy Transfer Wizard option labeled "A Network." Connect both your new and old PC to a network--if they aren't already--and then create a shared network folder on the old PC. Use the options in the Easy Transfer Wizard to select which program and files will be stored in the shared folder on the old computer. Copy the files from the shared folder to the new PC.

    • 4). Use an external hard drive, CD/DVD or flash drive to facilitate the transfer. Select the Transfer Wizard option labeled "Your hard drive or flash drive to the computer," or "Floppy drive or other removable media"--depending on your version of Windows. Continue through the Transfer Wizard to backup your data and settings to the drive.
