How to Walk Down Stairs in Heels

15
Walking down stairs may seem simple enough, unless you're doing it wearing high heels. Many women are used to walking around in high heels, but even to the most veteran high heel wearers, walking down stairs can be a bit daunting. Here is a way to do it. Watching a women attempt to walk in high heels when she has no idea what she is doing generally offers bystanders a good laugh at the poor girl's expense.

If the simple act of walking in high heels incorrectly is enough to make someone laugh, then tumbling down a staircase because you aren't sure how to make it safely from the top to the bottom is sure to be an embarrassing situation for you. It really isn't as hard as it might seem to walk down a staircase in a set of high heels without taking a tumble.

Make sure that your heels are on comfortably and that they are fully on your feet. If they aren't attached to your feet properly, they can become loose while you're walking down the stairs, and you could lose your balance. Wearing a pair of high heels that is too large may cause you unnecessary difficulty because you may find yourself having a hard time not tripping over the extra room in the toes. If you wear a pair of heels that is too small for your feet, then you may find it difficult to remain balanced because you feel unnecessary discomfort when you put your full weight on your feet.

Hold on to the railing or banister as you are walking down the stairs. Not only will it help you with your balance, but if you start to (hopefully not) trip, you have something to grab on to. Start to walk down the stairs, walking on the ball of your foot. This is the thick, flat part of your foot below your toes that you use when you are standing on tippy toes. Your heel should be slightly raised off of the stair itself. This is why it is important to make sure that your shoes fit perfectly onto your feet, so when you use the ball of your foot to step down, the shoes don't slide off of your heel. The reason to use the ball of your foot as opposed to stepping with your entire foot is because shoes have the arch underneath the shoe that makes up the heel. Stairs are usually not as wide as the entire bottom of a shoe. If you step with your whole foot and your shoe slides forward and catches the arch, you could be pushed forward and could slip.

Take the stairs slow; don't rush walking down. Step down on one stair and wait a few seconds before you take the next step. Make sure that you are fully balanced before you take each step. Keep your toes pointed forward. Don't turn them or your body sideways as you're walking down the stairs. Don't tense up or panic. Keep calm and relaxed, and you will be more likely to make it down the stairs without so much as a tiny slip. Take your time with each step and make sure that you glance down at least occasionally, if not with every step, so that you can be sure that there are no unforeseen obstacles in your way that may cause you to take a tumble.
