- It's very important to remember that a very young puppy will often not know why he has been let outside.
Imagine if you were potty training a child - you wouldn't just hand him a potty and expect him to work it out would you.
It's exactly the same with a young puppy - you need to let them know the reasons why he has to go outside. - The first thing your pooch will do when you let him outside is to chase the birds, sniff around the flower bed or bark as your neighbor cuts the grass - basically anything but potty.
As far as your pooch is concerned it's play time and not potty time. - The first thing you need to do is actually tell your puppy why you are going outside - say in a clear voice 'Toilet Time' and attach a leash to your puppy.
Wait for him to sniff and look like he is about to potty and then say 'Poop Time'.
As soon as he has pooped give him a treat and lots of praise.
After the praise have some play time.
By having a game after he has pooped it will encourage your pooch to potty quickly as he is aware he will get some play-time after. - Keep practicing everyday - don't just attach a leash one day and use the techniques above just to never use them again - this will soon be forgotten by your puppy.
Don't expect too much too soon when house training a puppy.
Keep it simple and practice daily and before long your puppy will be able to do it without the use of a leash and just with praise and no reward.
