Windows Phone will finally be getting the VLC media player and it could be released as soon as next week.

Thomas Nigro, one of the developers of the VLC (short for VideoLAN) app on Windows Phone, responded to Brad Sams, the editor at Neowin, that there was a very good chance that VLC would be out before the end of the month.

That's great news for Windows Phone users that have waited for the extremely popular open-source media player that has the ability to stream media, play encrypted DVDs, and more. Back in November 2012, there was a Kickstarter fundraiser for VLC media player to be developed for the new Windows 8 operating system (RT specifically because those that could install legacy apps could add VLC media player for Windows anyway) and the Windows Phone.

There's been constant reports that the program would be available throughout the year, notably in early August, but Nigro discussed compiler issues that obviously pushed back the release date. Here was a screenshot of VLC on Windows Phone that was posted by Nigro on Twitter back in March.

Currently, the VLC media player is available on a wide variety of operating systems including Windows, Mac, Linux, and more. Notably, it's on the iOS and Android mobile platforms already, although the Android version has been in development since May 2012 and the beta version is only available in Google Play. Windows 8 also has a beta version that was released in March of this year.

It will also be in beta form on Windows Phone. Look out for the app this month, but beware of imitations. There's plenty of apps out there that are fake or even charging people money to purchase. Look for "beta" and "free" when searching for the VLC app as it will have those indicators, and the program is and always will be free because it's open-source.

VideoLAN is a project that develops software for playing video and other media formats across a local area network (LAN). It originally developed two programs for media streaming, VideoLAN Client (VLC) and VideoLAN Server (VLS), but most of the features of VLS have been incorporated into VLC, with the result renamed VLC media player.

The project began as a student endeavor at Ã?cole Centrale Paris (France), but after releasing the software under the free software/open source GNU General Public License, the project is now multinational with a development team spanning 20 nations.

The current President of the VideoLAN non-profit organization which maintains the project's website is Jean-Baptiste Kempf, who is also one of the project's developers.

Cons

Advanced knowledge: This app can do a lot more than just play media, but to access any of those more advanced features, you need to have some technical knowledge. Although there are thorough instructions on how to do just about anything, only users with some experience using this technology will be able to follow them accurately.

Inconsistent interface: This app is available for various systems, and its interface looks a little different on each one. That means that Wikis containing instructions for completing various processes aren't necessarily describing the same interface you're seeing. If you know what you're doing, though, you can still accomplish what you set out to do, and then add your experience to the document to help make it more complete for future users.
