How to Register a Canadian Trade-Mark
- 1). Open an Internet browser and navigate to the Industry Canada registration page.
- 2). Fill in the required information and press "Done" to complete the registration process.
- 3). Navigate to the CIPO trade-mark homepage and scroll down to the "How to register" section. Click on the "Submit Your Application" link.
- 4). Review the "Filing a Trade-Mark Application" overview and verify that you have access to the required information.
- 5). Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the "File A Trade-Mark Application" link to begin the application process.
- 6). Enter the user name and password created on the Industry Canada website and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the application process.
- 7). Wait for the "Formal Filing Acknowledgement" and a proof sheet to verify that the application has been reviewed and accepted. The documents will arrive by mail within seven days of submitting an application. The trade-mark will now appear as "pending" in the Canadian Trade-Marks Database.
- 8). Pay the registration fee once the official "Notice of Allowance" arrives by mail. The fee payment is time sensitive and the deadline will be clearly stated in the documents accompanying the Notice of Allowance.
- 9). Wait three to four weeks for the official certificate of registration to arrive by mail. The status of the trade-mark will be updated in the Canadian Trade-Mark Database during this time and the "registered" status can be confirmed through their search tool.
