Jewelry - Home Based Business

52
Now is the time to start a new business.
Today is always the day that you start something new.
You have been waiting for the right circumstances, the right timing, and for a turn of events in your personal life that would allow you to pursue the realistic dream of owning your own business.
It is now! You either have a strong interest in learning how to make jewelry or you have experience in jewelry making.
Regardless of your level of jewelry talents of being a beginning hobbyist or an advanced jewelry artisan you can make it in this beautiful industry.
There are many choices available in jewelry construction.
Here is a check list that will help you to consider what one, two, or three directions you may want to start assembling and selling handmade or handcrafted jewelry:
  • Classical, traditional and vintage jewelry.
  • Everyday fashion jewelry to high end fashion jewelry.
  • Ethnic, bohemian, and exotic jewelry.
  • Trendy or contemporary jewelry.
  • Specialty - period fashion costumes, bridal wear and novelty pendants or charms.
Your interests and talents will determine what type of jewelry supplies will be needed.
Will you be needing beads, gems, metals, thread, chains, leather, velvet, natural or man-made jewelry accessories? At the very start of your business I would recommend that you specialize in one type of jewelry making.
If you decide that you want to combine two or three other types, it will be to your advantage that multiple choices use the same equipment to avoid overextending yourself from the expenses to the working space.
The next checklist concerns your market:
  • Infants
  • Children
  • Teens
  • Young adults
  • Women
  • Men
  • All of the above.
You have chosen the category and the market that you would like to be a jewelry designer.
The last checklist is your business skills:
  • Advertising, marketing, and promotions.
  • Public relations and customer service
  • Policies
  • Accounting, record keeping, and inventory.
As a fellow artist, I know that artisans do not like the business keeping chores; however, you will need to be aware of your expenses and profits.
Currently, you are considering a home based business and the secret to operating any business is to keep it simple.
Do not complicate business matters to where they become a chore.
For now you just need to be aware that you will need to have as much business knowledge as possible or at least prepare for the future to hire services of others to manage certain aspects of your jewelry business.
A word of experienced advice is to start a small home based business and learn as you go.
Keep in mind to stay one step ahead.
