Earthworms are a popular bait for fish hooks and catching specific types of fish in freshwater lakes, such as bass, perch and catfish. There are a number of different ways to bait a worm onto a fish hook depending on the size of the worm and the size of the hook. - Medium-sized worms work well for medium-sized hooks and can be baited on the fish hook by sliding the point into one end of the worm and then running the entire worm's body over the hook. The worm must be of a certain size and thickness if you plan to bait your hook this way. Otherwise, the worm's body will fall apart and fall off the hook when you cast it. If baited correctly, a fish taking the worm will undoubtedly hook itself.
- For smaller hooks that are being baited with worms, there is a specific method that should be followed so the worm fits on the hook and doesn't fall off when casting it. Cut the worm into many pieces and stab these pieces through the point of the hook. Where you run the hook through these pieces of worm doesn't matter as long as they are firmly attached to the hook so that they don't fall off during casting and fish can't easily nibble them away.
- With large worms like night crawlers, you obviously will need a larger hook. Thread these worms onto these larger hooks by securely running the sharp part of the hook through the head of the worm and then folding it end over end and running the hook through these thicker folds of the body. Make sure the tail can extend a bit from the bottom of the hook and the point is hidden in the body. This way, the worm will look like it is floating through the water to any hungry fish nearby.
