The Bottom Line

The Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel is a very nice, boutique hotel for business travelers conveniently located on a quiet side street right across from Grand Central Station. It brings a unique Irish feel to your New York City visit, with a very friendly and competent service staff and comfortable rooms. I especially appreciated its small outdoor patio with heaters that made it possible to have drink outside, even through it was the middle of winter!

Guide Review - Review of the Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel, New York, NY

The Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel provides visitors with a little bit of Irish warmth and hospitality in an elegant, New York City boutique setting.

The hotel, which is located just across the street and up the block from Grand Central is a good bet for business travelers that want to be near the train and subway lines, or near the Grand Hyatt convention center. It’s also a good alternative for business travelers that are attending business meetings or conventions at the Grand Hyatt, but want a bit more of a personalized stay.

The ten floor hotel has roughly 150 non-smoking rooms and suites. As of this writing (February, 2009) the hotel is updating the furnishings in all its rooms, one floor at a time. But there’s no noise impact on guests, since no carpentry or construction is being done. The updated rooms have a clean, modern elegant feel that works well.

There’s a convenient (and good) espresso bar just outside the hotel’s entrance, and a Staples just around the corner.

The room I stayed in was quiet, and there was little or no street noise. Window coverings were solid and the bed was extremely comfortable—the mattress was unusually soft (I usually like them firm) but I slept amazingly well.

The hotel does attract a large Irish clientele, since they also have hotels in Ireland, so expect to run into some brogues in the Wheeltapper pub/restaurant downstairs. The Wheeltapper is a cozy pub with good, if not impressive, food options. The (heated) outdoor patio provides a nice option even in the winter. Up to the minute Grand Central train schedules are listed on a TV in the pub, so you can relax until the very last minute before dashing off for a train.
