    History

    • The modern Power Stroke diesel engine is based on a 6.9-liter International Harvester design from 1983 that made 144 horsepower and 315 foot lbs. of torque.

    Configuration

    • The Power Stroke diesel engine is fairly unique in the diesel world, in that it is a V8. Most diesel engines are either inline six- or eight-cylinder designs.

    Most Powerful

    • The most powerful Power Stroke is the 7.3-liter, which is based on the International T444E. It produces 275 horsepower and 525 foot lbs. of torque.

    Reliability

    • Power Stroke engines are known to regularly outlast practically every other aspect of the truck, including the transmission and door handles.

    Racing

    • Because of their tough internal construction, some racing Power Stroke V8s have been known to exceed 2,000 horsepower with the stock block and crankshaft.

    Models

    • Ford uses the Power Stroke diesel primarily in its F-Series pickup trucks. It also is available in the Econoline full-size van and the Excursion SUV.
