What to Do If a Dog Is Vomiting Up His Food?

31

    Remove the Dog Food

    • If a dog starts to vomit after eating, immediately remove his food bowl and do not feed the dog the same food until the issue is cleared up. Your dog could be having an allergic reaction to the dog food type, or it is causing a digestive problem. As a precaution, remove that dog food until the dog feels better or a veterinarian has found the source of the vomiting problem.

    Find the Cause of Vomiting

    • Look around the house for a possible cause of vomiting, such as chewed up medication containers or opened bags of chocolate. Check the trash for the possibility of your dog eating food scraps or chicken bones. If you are unable to find something that the dog chewed up in the home, it could be an internal issue such as a digestive problem. Monitor the dog for other symptoms, such as diarrhea, that could be related. The veterinarian will be interested in any symptoms other than vomiting.

    Bland Dog Food Diet

    • Place your dog on a bland dog food diet by cooking rice and white chicken meat. The bland diet should be cooked well, especially the chicken until there is no pink in the middle of the meat. You can use a food processor for a fine texture, once the ingredients have been fully cooled. The sick dog can eat this bland diet for a couple of days until vomiting has ceased, or until a veterinarian has given you further instructions.
