• When the wind blows, it causes the blades of the windmill or wind turbine to rotate. This mechanical energy turns shafts and gears that spin the rotor inside the generator, according to GreenLivingTips. Electromagnetic Induction

• The magnetic rotor in the generator is surrounded by copper wire looped around an iron core. The spinning of the rotor creates a magnetic field. This process, called electromagnetic induction, generates an electrical current.
  
  

Where the Current Goes

• The electrical current can either be stored in batteries, be channeled into the electrical grid or into a building or home for use, according to GreenLivingTips. The power produced by some commercial models can power about 5,000 homes.
