How to Grow a Nightblooming Cereus

12
    • 1). Keep the nightblooming cereus in a 1-gallon container with drainage holes. Use 1 part course sand and 1 part commercial potting soil as the medium. Leave the soil loose and do not pat down. Loose soil allows the roots to spread out and establish themselves quicker.

    • 2). Keep the soil damp but not wet. Water the plant once every two weeks during spring and summer. Because this plant is a member of the cactus family, it doesn't require as much water as other houseplants. It can succumb to root rot when the roots are continually wet. During the fall and winter, water the plant when the soil is dry about once a month.

    • 3). Place the container indoors about 3 feet from a sunny window. Nightblooming cereus needs indirect sunlight during the day. When placing the container outdoors, choose a location with partial shade/partial sun.

    • 4). Fertilize the nightblooming cereus with 20-20-20 (nitrogen-phosphate-potassium) water-soluble fertilizer diluted in half once a year in March to promote growth and blooming.

    • 5). Pound a dowel into the soil for the plant to wrap itself around if you want it to grow in an upward direction. Vines can be allowed to grow downward in a hanging basket if you prefer.
