Cabinet Making for Beginners

28

    Materials

    • Cabinets can be made out of any material. If you are just looking for a basic cabinet, plywood may be your best bet. However, depending on the dimensions of the cabinets, you can make them out of any wood. Go with the wood that is best going to match the feel of the kitchen.

    Dimensions

    • Measure the dimensions of the kitchen to get the height, width and length of your cabinets. Often, cabinets are built in sections, which makes installing them much easier. Corners can be filled with cabinets, which are shapes like a right triangle so the back fits into the corner and the front is angled outward. Your floor cabinets should come up to a height of about 36-inches that provides you with a comfortable counter height in which to work. There is usually a depth of 24-inches. For wall-mounted cabinets, you should make sure the bottom of the cabinet is about 5-feet off the floor and then the cabinet goes up to the ceiling. The depth should also be 24-inches. Note, these are just standard measurements and you will have to measure your kitchen to make sure this will fit.

    Putting the Cabinet Together

    • Building the cabinet itself is rather easy. You will need to build a basic box out of the wood selected with a door and shelves. The difficulty comes in placing the shelves and how the door works. The easiest way is to place the sides and back of the cabinet on the bottom and then add the shelves at the height you want them. Then you can add the front of the cabinet. Also, you will need to cut a space in the front of the cabinet that provides a frame for your cabinet. The edges of your frame should be about an inch. Make sure when you build your door, it covers the hole you cut but is still slightly smaller than the cabinet. For a nice touch, stain the cabinets before you install any hardware.
