What Were the Characteristics of the Inca Religion?

28

    Gods

    • The Inca religion was somewhat similar to Greek mythology in that the Incas believed in many gods. The Incas strongly believed that everything that existed or happened was due to a god. They believed that the gods controlled everything and everyone. Because of this belief, the Incas spent much of their time trying to please the gods.

    Dreams

    • Dreams were very important to the Incas. They believed that their gods could communicate with them through dreams. They also believed that their gods would send them signs or omens. The local priests interpreted the signs, dreams and omens and relayed messages to the people.

    Afterlife

    • Incas believed in an afterlife. For this reason, they would mummify the dead and offer them gifts. They had funerals that lasted up to eight days. Many of the dead were laid in tombs. If a person who had died was a ruler or another person of power, the Incas often would treat the body as if the person were still alive. Servants would bring them things, and families would have conversations with the body.

    Nature

    • Most of the Inca religion, including gods and sacred places, revolved around nature. Their gods were in direct connection with nature. Sacred places or objects, called Huacas, also revolved around nature. Many of the Huacas were places where families would pray. Like offerings made to the dead, the Incas would make offerings and hold ceremonies around the Huacas.
