How Does a Person Junk a Car?

24

    Donating

    • Various charity organizations have car donation programs in place. According to the KnowledgeHound website, any car donated to a 501(C)(3) organization is eligible for a tax deduction of $500 or the actual worth of the car. The site recommends calling a reputable charity and asking about its donation policy. Some services---Cars 4 Charities, for example---will pick up the car, auction it off and give the proceeds to charity.

    Trading

    • Car dealerships often promote "push, pull or drag" sales, in which they claim to offer a certain amount of trade-in value for vehicles in any condition. A new alternative, according to the CarsDirect website, is to find a company that will trade something other than dealer credit for your vehicle. These organizations will take the vehicle in exchange for travel vouchers, restaurant certificates and other goods and services.

    Selling

    • If the vehicle runs, KnowledgeHound recommends checking its "Kelley Blue Book" value and trying to find a private buyer or used car dealer that might purchase it. Some services will auction the car off, deduct the towing and fees and pay the difference to the seller. The site says this practice usually only brings in a small profit, but it involves little work on the seller's part.

    Selling Parts

    • Most junk vehicles at least have salvageable parts. KnowledgeHound recommends using an online auction site to sell those parts. Online searches can also help find parts dealers that specialize in certain makes and models. Local mechanics, dealers and some junkyards will buy vehicles for the value of the working parts.

    Junking a Vehicle

    • If a vehicle no longer runs, according to KnowledgeHound, it can often be sold to a scrap metal recycler or salvage yard. These options should only be considered when other options have been exhausted. Salvage and scrap yards tend to pay little and often charge for towing. Removal services, such as Junk My Car, will sometimes tow the car away free of charge.
