Tips for Buying a Bass Boat

40
Before you begin your quest to purchase a used or a new bass boat, there are a few factors you should consider. The last thing you want to do is buy an expensive, inconvenient boat, or realize after the purchase that it just doesn't suit you. Read on for insider tips on how to buy the right boat for you!

Selecting a Bass Boat

Buying a boat is similar to buying a house. You don't buy a house without taking a tour, checking out the neighborhood, and calling in an inspector. It is essential that you test drive it, check out the cosmetic features, and have the engine inspected. If it's a used bass boat, and you still like it after you calculate any costs for improvements you might need to make, then it's probably a pretty good choice.

Scoping out the neighborhood around a new home is similar to researching that particular type of boat you're considering buying. You can often find answers to your questions from your 'neighbors' in bass fishing forums, bass fishing videos, and bass fishing articles. You can find out what type of look you want, whether aluminum or fiberglass. Or consider the amount of horsepower you want from your boat -and if you need advice, just ask.

Testing the Bass

• Take the potential buy out on a rainy and or windy day.
• Don't be afraid to open up the engine. This is a great way to find out the condition of the bass boat's transmission.
• Take good, solid steps on the flooring to make sure it is sturdy and properly installed. By pushing on the siding, you can see just how well together this bass boat was assembled. If it bends or flexes in, that's not a good sign.
• Ask questions about the manufacturing of the bass boat to the dealer or seller. Or if it is used, ask how it was stored or if it has received any damage.
• If the boat is used, ask about the maintenance schedule, and ask to see copies of the maintenance receipts; provided that you don't have the boat inspected by a mechanic. This is key advice, especially if you don't know the person.
• Don't forget to examine the trailer. Check the lights and listen for sounds coming from the bearings after the boat is lowered into the water.
• Lastly, inspect the tires like you would any other type of tire.

Is the bass boat comfortable?

While you're test driving the new bass boat, don't forget to make sure it's comfortable. After all, you're going to be sitting in it a lot this year!

Consider these questions:

• Is the boat large enough to accommodate room for more than 3 people?
• Does the steering wheel tilt so you can easily read the gauges?
• Are the seats comfortable? Think about long periods of sitting.
• Is there enough storage?

When you finally select the bass boat you want to own, look up the boat's value. Don't be afraid to offer lower than that of what the seller is asking, especially if it is a used bass boat. Often, the seller wants to get rid of the boat more than you think they do. And finally - don't forget to have a blast out in your used or new bass boat, enter some bass tournaments, and happy bass fishing!
