Signs of Acting Agitated
- A person who is acting agitated may not be able to maintain eye contact for very long. A shifting gaze or excessive blinking is a sign of agitation. The eyes are reflecting the turmoil and heightened emotions the person may be experiencing.
- Nail biting is a habit that provides some comfort because it is a person ritual. When nail biting becomes compulsive, and causes painful tears to the cuticles, it could be a sign that an individual is agitated and chewing to alleviate stress. Excessively clenching the fists and or cracking the knuckles are other hand-related signs of agitation.
- Sleeping or eating less is a sign of restlessness, particularly when the individual is withdrawing from a alcohol or drug dependency. Agitation can manifest in forms of hyperactivity that make it difficult for a person to get a night's rest or enjoy a meal.
- Speaking rapidly or withdrawing completely are indications of agitation. The cadence and pitch of a person's voice can indicate irritability. A calm, soothing tone is rarely used when someone is agitated. A severely agitated person might also turn inward and may be not interested in speaking at all.
