How to Remove Baffles From 1993 Yamaha Virago 750s
- 1). Unbolt the Yamaha exhaust mufflers from the exhaust pipes using the socket wrench. The mounting bolts are located just underneath the passenger foot peg with one additional mounting bolt located between the mufflers near the rear axle of the motorcycle. With the mufflers unbolted and loosened, slip them off of the Virago's exhaust pipes toward the back of the bike.
- 2). Secure the Yamaha Virago's mufflers to a stable work surface such as a workbench. Load the metal grinding bit into the drill. In the open end of the exhaust pipe from which the exhaust exits, you will see a round metal disc surrounding a smaller diameter inner pipe. The inner pipe is the actual exhaust tube, and the metal disc is the first of two baffles. Between the baffles is wadded fiberglass or steel wool. The outer diameter of the metal disc is welded to the outer shell of the muffler. Use the metal grinding bit to remove this weld. Perform the same operation on the other muffler.
- 3). Load the hole saw into the drill. Center the hole saw's guide drill into the middle of the inner exhaust pipe, and then cut away the inner diameter of the round metal disc to free it from the inner exhaust pipe. Then remove it from the muffler. Do the same with the Virago's second muffler.
- 4). Remove the fiberglass or metal wadding from within the muffler using a pair of needle-nose pliers. With the 1993 Yamaha Virago's inner sound-deadening material removed, it's time to tune the mufflers. Reinstall them on the Virago, and then crank the engine. If you are satisfied with the sound, you're finished. If you want to increase the sound, drill the inner baffle. Turn off the engine before proceeding.
- 5). Load the extended length drill bit into the drill, and then use it to drill several holes into the inner baffle of the exhaust. The more holes you drill, the louder the exhaust becomes. Do not attempt to fully remove this baffle, however, as it helps to serve as a structural member of the muffler, holding the Virago mufflers to the exhaust pipe.
