Exactly What Is An App and How Does It Work?
Here's the clearest answer I can give on what a cell phone app is.
It's the other stuff on your cell phone.
An app (application) lets you use your cell phone for doing things other than making a phone call.
The primary function of a cell phone is for making calls right? Remember when people were getting cell phones just to make sure they could call 911 in case they needed to? (Yes, they did..
..
) Well now, you can use your cell phone for so many other things like: an alarm, a timer, a calendar, a calculator, a voice recording...
etc.
Those are all applications.
You can go into the menu of your phone and there are a whole list of apps such as "browser" that gets you to the internet, "messaging" for writing a text message, "contacts" for your phone list, the "organizer" to get to your calculator and a few to many others.
That's all.
It's as simple as that.
Go to your menu and there are (at least some of) the applications your phone has to offer.
Now what's interesting is how they work and what they do.
Again, we'll just go over the basics.
Of the applications that you have on your phone, go into "organizer" or whatever gets you to your calculator.
Then you'll see alist of choices within that category.
You may have a calendar, a converter, a stopwatch, a note pad, and a calculator among other things.
When you select one of these, it comes into view for your use; a calendar will appear or whatever you've chosen.
They do little things for you while you're on the go and away from home.
Many things are consolidated into one preventing you from having to go to a stationary calendar, or pull out a pad and pencil, or go a drawer to pull out a calculator, or (forbid us all) figure it out in our heads!!! The whole point is that applications make cell phones into little mini computers.
Cell phones are much more than just a phone.
It's a way of managing and living your life.
Many of these are basic as I talked about above however, there are literally thousands of them available that can help you better manage your lifestyle.
Do you order pizza often? Pizza Hut has an app on iPhone where people can make their own pizza.
While they wait for the delivery they can play a game (I guess if you don't have anything else better to do).
Do you like to go out on the town? There are travel applications that provide information on cultural interests such as clubs and restaurants as well as perks and discounts.
There is even an app that allows you to point to an airplane to give info on that particular plane (I kid you not).
Businesses are also developing applications and considering them as "critical" to their organization's efficiency and productivity.
If you've been using a cell phone for a while now you have already used apps and understand a lot more than you think.
