    • 1). Open the Sonata's hood. The hood release lever is located below the dash and to the left on the driver's side of the car.

    • 2). Put on the gloves and safety glasses. Gently tap the battery terminals with the wrench to loosen any built up corrosion. Mix the baking soda and water together in equal parts, then put some on the toothbrush and scrub the terminals to remove any remaining corrosion.

    • 3). Use the wrench to loosen the bolt holding each terminal wire to the posts on the battery. Remove the terminal wires from the battery and lift it up and out of the battery tray. Scrub the interior of the terminals to remove any corrosion on the exposed metal.

    • 4). Place the replacement battery in the battery tray. A 2008 Hyundai Sonata needs a size 24F battery. The guide in the Resources section below can help determine the right battery to meet cost and reliability needs.

    • 5). Slide the positive terminal wire on the positive battery post and tighten the battery bolt to lock it in place. Repeat with the negative terminal. Close the hood of the Hyundai Sonata.
