How to House Train Puppies With a Bell
- 1). Tie a large jingle bell with string around the knob of the door that your puppy uses to go outdoors to relieve himself. The bell should be low enough for your puppy to reach with his nose.
- 2). Shake the bell and say "go potty" each time before opening the door, then walk outside with your puppy.
- 3). Encourage your puppy to touch the bell herself after five to seven days from the start of training. Walk to the door with your puppy, say "go potty," and wait a minute to see if she will ring it. Your puppy may understand right away what is expected of her, but do not show frustration if it takes several tries before she does this on her own.
- 4). Try putting a little peanut butter on the bell if your puppy needs further encouragement to put his nose to it.
- 5). Give your puppy affection and praise when she rings the bell to reinforce the behavior, and perhaps a small food reward. She will associate the positive praise and treats with the act of ringing the bell.
- 6). Take your puppy outside promptly when he goes to the door alone and rings the bell. Failure to let him outside when he alerts you may slow down the training process.
