Mammals

• There are a range of mammals which are well suited for forest life. Black bears have claws which help them to climb trees and thick fur to survive the cold winters. Red and gray squirrels are well suited to living in forest trees. Coyotes, red foxes, wild boars, chipmunks, weasels, white-tailed deer and raccoons can also be found in forests around the world.
  
  

Birds

• Forests are home to a variety of birds that feed on small mammals and fruits, nuts, seeds and insects found in the forest environment. Bald eagles, woodpeckers, hawks, cardinals, goshawks and turkeys are all birds which can be found in forests around the globe. Spotted owls can also be found in temperate coniferous forests.
  
  

Reptiles

• Some reptiles are well adapted to live in the forest, especially in the rainforest. The dense, canopy layer that rainforest trees create stops the sun from penetrating the forest floor, which means that reptiles need to be suited to living in the trees. A variety of snakes, such as the rat snake, are particularly adapted for living in the forest environment.
  
  

Amphibians

• A range of frogs, toads and newts can be found in a forest. Frogs such as spring peepers, blue poison dart frogs, giant monkey frogs and green arrow frogs are particularly suited to a rainforest environment. They are agile and can jump easily from tree to tree using well-developed adhesive toe pads, making them perfectly suited to a forest environment where trees are the dominant plant type.
