How to Take a Portrait of Three People
- 1). Consider the clothing of the three people who will be in the portrait. The clothing should be compatible in tone, either all warm or all stark colors. If one of the three people is dressed in bright colors or in a distracting pattern, have that person stand in the middle.
- 2). Arrange the three persons according to height if color is not an issue. The heights should be staggered if possible and if the gender of the group is mixed, have the men stand taller than the women.
- 3). Instruct the two outer people to lean their heads in towards the middle person. This will give the portrait a warmer feeling. Also, the three persons in the portrait should be touching one another or should at least be standing close enough to one another that negative spaces cannot be seen between the persons.
- 4). Instruct the three persons as to what emotion they should all be expressing so that the portrait is unified. You can ask them how they would like to look if you do not want to direct the shoot too much.
- 5). Take the picture and several more if you can. It is always good to offer your clients options to choose from. It is also good to have back up photos in case the first one you take is lost or flawed in some way.
