How to Win a VA Claim

59
    • 1). Contact multiple veterans' service officers before you make your claim, take your time and pick a VA Officer in which you feel comfortable and confident in. They can assist you on the process of filing and are very helpful in providing you with vital information and essential paperwork.

    • 2). Download a PDF blank copy of the SF 180 form by simply typing SF 180 in Google, along with a PDF editor like my favorite "Nitro PDF" Which enables you to directly type in the required information on the SF 180 form and save a copy. You may also fill in the PDF without the software but you will have to print the form directly and you won't be able to save it to file. This would make life much easier for you if you need to make corrections on the form in the future. If you do not have access to a computer your VA Officer can provide you with the SF 180 Form and information obtaining one by mail or fax. I recommend you send four SF 180 forms. For your DD 214, all military service files including medical and personnel records, updating of awards and decorations and one for your units History and descent. You will also have to fill out a VA Form 21-526 which you can get from your VA Officer.

    • 3). To help back your claim, request copies of all your medical records from Hospitals and private physicians you have visited. The Freedom of information act states that "...any person has the right to request access to federal agency records or information". This will be vital in backing your claim.

    • 4). Do not send any requests or documentation directly to the VA Office. Please make sure you route through your Veterans service officer. He/she will create a log to keep track of what is being sent to the VA office and also screen for anything that maybe missing or not needed. This is very important as to help back your claim if the VA says they have not received the request or your paperwork goes missing. Make sure to keep copies of all paperwork you send to the VA, do NOT send originals unless required.
