How to Refinish Wellborn Cabinets

20
    • 1). Unscrew all the hinges, handles and knobs from the cabinet doors with your screwdriver.

    • 2). Lay a drop cloth over your counters and place the cabinet doors on it, face up.

    • 3). Pour 1/4 cup all purpose cleanser into a basin filled with 1 gallon water. Dip a sponge into the liquid and wipe down the exterior of all your cabinets, removing dirt and dust. Give them 20 minutes to air dry.

    • 4). Place a piece of 100-grit sandpaper at the bottom of an electric sander. Run the sander across the surface area of the cabinets to remove the old finish. You'll have to go slowly and be patient to get all the old finish off. Repeat with 220-grit sandpaper.

    • 5). Wipe down all the cabinets with a tack cloth to remove all the dust from sanding.

    • 6). Shake the stain of your choice well and dip your foam brush into the stain, covering each cabinet with a generous coat of the stain. Allow it to soak for 20 minutes, then rub the excess off with a lint-free cloth. Add a second and third coat if you wish to make your cabinets darker.

    • 7). Allow the cabinets to dry overnight. Apply a light coat of polyurethane to the front of each cabinet with a 3-inch nylon brush for a clear, protective finish.
