How to Keep Your Boyfriends Mom onside!
When you're head over heels in love with your boy, it is an understatement to say that your life will be really easy if you have a very good relationship with his mother; rather, it is more apt to say that it will work to your best advantage if you have his mom as your ally.
If you find yourself agonizing about meeting his parents for the first time, especially his mom, fret no more! Whether you're just about to meet her or you've already met her, here are some ways to make your boyfriend's mom your best friend.
1. Be polite - Moms are supposed to teach their kids good manners and right conduct. You will no doubt earn good marks from his mom, if you show her you can be a good mom for her would-be grandchildren. Offer to help out in the kitchen when you're at their place, ask permission before you use the phone, etc. Don't forget the things you were taught by your own mom - say thank you, you're welcome, please. All those polite words you were taught back in kindergarten.
2. Be genuinely interested - Mom's love to talk about their kids and well, just about everything under the sun. It may sometimes be very painstaking if your boy's mom is a talker, but try not to show your impatience. Instead, ask her questions to let her know you're listening and are interested about her stories. If her viewpoints do not necessarily jive with yours, a good and neutral way to respond is to say: "That's an interesting way to look at it", or something of that sort. Whatever it is, it would be wise not to engage in a debate.
3. Take care of his baby - His mom will love you if she sees you have your boy's best interest at heart. If you're about to leave for a basket ball game, check his bag to make sure that he has extra towels, shirt and pants to change into after the game and of course don't forget the bottled water. Offer to make a healthy clubhouse sandwich as well while you're at it. You will be an angel in her sight as she knows her baby is in good hands.
So why should you follow these tips, you ask? Because I am now married to the love of my life and I enjoy a very good relationship with my mother-in-law. In fact, every time his mom finds out we've had a misunderstanding, my mother-in-law, would call up my husband to talk some sense into him, which is a big help to me her favorite daughter-in-law (she has 5 sons by the way, four of whom are married).
Remember, a man can have as many girlfriends as he wants to, but he can only have one mother, so it will be worth your while to earn the love and respect of the first woman in your man's life - his mom.
