How to Mix Deck Mud for Shower Pans
- 1). Set a bucket or wheelbarrow in a cool, dry place where it will be undisturbed while you mix. The actual amount of cement, sand and water you need to use will vary by the size of the area you need to cover, so make sure you have enough room in your bucket or wheelbarrow to accommodate.
- 2). Pour five parts sharp sand (fine-ground stone) and one part Portland cement into your mixing area. Remember that the amount of each that you need varies by the size of your shower pan, but the ratio must always be five-to-one. Stir the dry ingredients together with a shovel to mix them thoroughly.
- 3). Slowly add water to the mixture and toss it around using your shovel to mix it in. add enough water so that the material clumps together in your hand when you grab it, but no excess water leaks out when you squeeze. Again, the actual amount of water needed will vary by the amount of sand and cement you need.
- 4). Continue to mix until your entire batch retains the correct consistency.
