How to Replace a Screen Door Latch
- 1). Remove the old screen door handle. Hold the outside handle in place while you unscrew the mounting screws on the inside handle. Once the screws are loosened, pull the handles apart and remove them.
- 2). Put the parts of the replacement exterior door handle together by following the manufacturer's instructions. Hold the handle in an upright position and slide its spindle through the center hole in the door.
- 3). Hold the inside handle up to the spindle so the latch part will face toward the strike plate when it's installed. Slide the handle over the spindle.
- 4). Hold the inside and outside screen door handles together so they fit tightly against the door. Insert the mounting screws into the interior handle and tighten them.
- 5). Open and close the screen door a few times to find out if the replacement latch works with the existing strike plate. If it doesn't, remove the existing strike plate by unscrewing it.
- 6). Instruct a helper to hold the screen door shut from the outside. Hold the new strike plate on the door frame where the old one was located. Slide the plate up or down to position it so the latch catches it in the middle.
- 7). Mark the center of the two mounting slots with a pencil. Open the door and drill a 3/32-inch starter hole on each mark. Position the strike plate and screw it onto the door frame.
