How to Use Circle Hooks
- 1). Decide which rig you want to use. A couple of good options are a live-bait rig, which consists, in order, of a sliding sinker, swivel, 24- to 36-inch leader and the hook. This rig is especially effective in deep water. A second option is to use a bobber rig. In that case, affix a bobber to the line, crimp a couple of split shot weights 10 inches above the hook and tie the hook to the line. The best knot for attaching a circle hook to fishing line is the Snell knot.
- 2). Bait the hook. On live-bait rigs, leeches, minnows and night crawlers are the most popular options. Those three work well on bobber rigs, too, as do wax worms.
- 3). Wait for a fish to bite. When you get a bite, do not set the hook as you would with a standard hook. Circle hooks are designed to hook fish as they swim away, so when you feel a bite, wait a couple of seconds and then start reeling.
- 4). Maintain tension on the line as you reel in the fish.
