It's not uncommon for couples to worry about how their honeymoon will turn out. After all, it's expensive. Perhaps it involves more travel than you've done. And, scariest of all, you're not a "road-tested" couple yet — meaning you haven't already vacationed together. Whatever the case, these are the main causes of honeymoon jitters, and what you can do to calm them.

You'll forget to pack an essential item. Chances are, whatever you forgot at home, you can buy when you're away.

It might not be easy to obtain (like a prescription) or inexpensive (like a pair of designer sunglasses), but in all likelihood you can acquire it in your vacation spot. To be on the safe side, make a vacation packing list and check it twice before you go. Bring things that you simply cannot live without, such as birth control, in your carryon bag.

The weather will be awful. You're right. It may be. Hedge your bets by picking a destination where the weather is generally good, and find out more about vacation weather.

We'll have a fight or find out we're not compatible. Both are possible. Disagreeing in a constructive way and fighting fair is good practice for marriage. As for not being compatible, well, you're two different human beings, not identical twins. A honeymoon is a good place to learn to respect one another's differences. Even on this trip, you don't need to spend every minute together. Build in some "me" time.

The plane will crash. The odds are weighted heavily against this happening.

The chance of dying in a plane crash is 1 in 7,000,000. It's more likely that you'll die on the ground, struck by lightning (1 chance in 1,900,000). Here's another thing to know: The most dangerous parts of a flight are the first 60 seconds and landing. So if you hold hands and slowly count to 60 and you're still there, you can relax for the rest of the journey.

It's too expensive. Honeymoons are expensive, and having to pay for one after the cost of a wedding can burden to a new couple. There are three things I recommend to offset the cost:

• Sign up for a honeymoon registry so that instead of other kinds of wedding gifts your guests can purchase elements of your trip
• Book a stay at an all-inclusive resort. That way, you'll know the price upfront and all your meals will be included

The sex won't be great. Here's a little-known fact: Wedding night sex rarely is the best of your life (that might already have happened, the night you got engaged). If you're tired from traveling or had too much to drink, the sex may be disappointing. But look at it this way: You have the rest of your life together to improve it. So be patient and kind with each other — and don't be afraid to communicate your desires.

One of us will get sick. Could happen. So pack some Pepto Bismol and Imodium in case of minor stomach distress. If you fear serious health problems may arise or you're concerned about possible injuries, look into purchasing honeymoon travel insurance and reconsider that Kilimanjaro climb.

We'll get robbed. It's true that pickpockets are rife in many European capitals and elsewhere. So don't risk losing anything important: Leave a diamond engagement ring at home (replace it with a fake diamond ring), stash your passports in the hotel safe (carry a photocopy with you), keep your money and credit cards concealed, and avoid dicey neighborhoods after dark.
