How to Remove the Hide From a Deer Head
- 1). Cut straight up the back of the neck to 4 inches below the base of the antlers. Make a cut from this point to the back of each antler forming a Y.
- 2). Pull the skin out from the neck and cut through the membrane holding the skin to the neck muscle. Continue freeing the skin until you are at the base of the antlers on the top and the jaw line on the bottom.
- 3). Cut through the skin around the base of each antler. Work the skin free from the bone base of the antlers using the tip of the screwdriver.
- 4). Grip the skin with your free hand and pull it away from the skull. Cut the skin free by passing the blade between the skin and bone cutting through the membrane that attaches the skin to the skull.
- 5). Push the knife point down around the base of the ear cartilage all the way to the skull bone. Cut the ear free from the skull leaving the large chunk of cartilage that is the base of the ear attached to the ear. Repeat for the opposite ear.
- 6). Continue cutting the skin free from the skull down to the eyes. Stick your finger through the eye hole and pull the skin away from the eye. Slice through the membrane over the eye and then cut deep into the muscle at the front of the eye to completely remove the tear duct without cutting through it.
- 7). Skin down the muzzle to the corners of the mouth. From the outside stick your finger through the corner of the mouth and stretch the lips out toward you. Cut against the jaw bone freeing the upper and lower lips from the jaw leaving the lips on the skin.
- 8). Cut the entire mouth free from the jaws. Cut straight down through the nose cartilage where the skull bone begins leaving the inside of the nostrils attached to the skin. The skin is now free of the skull.
