Panic Attacks and Medication

18
As with any condition that is recognized medically there are medications that can be prescribed to alleviate the symptoms and ease the condition.
Panic attacks are no different, there are many medications that are used to help them and other anxiety disorders.
They are not the only treatment and probably not the most effective long term.
There are different methods of therapy that can also work towards beating this condition over time.
Some that may be prescribed are beta blockers which help control to some extent the physical side of the symptoms such as the racing heart and shaking, they come in the form of Propranolol or Atenolol.
Benzodiazepines come in many forms, Diazepam and Lorazepam being the most commonly known.
They are used to treat anxiety and panic but ironically one of their side effects is agitation and these can sometimes make anxiety in some patients worse than before, incredible.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or for short, known as SSRI's are also used for panic and anxiety and work by raising serotonins in the brain which can drop in sufferers of depression and anxiety.
The most common of these is Fluoxetine or Prozac, but other types are Paroxetine, Setraline and Fluvoxamine.
Tricyclic Antidepressants or TCA's as they are known, are normally used for treating severe depression but also get used for panic and anxiety disorders.
There are many types of this drug and come with names such as Imipramine or doxipin to name just a couple.
Apart from these commonly used drugs there are also some mild types of tranquillizers that get used as well to help with symptoms of mild anxiety.
As with all medical drugs the names are all very long and mean nothing to most people, so well done for getting through the last paragraph, I did not name all of the medications within each type because that could cause anyone anxiety in itself.
One major thing we have to remember with all drugs is that they are not without side effects and sometimes these can be quite severe.
The side effects do differ from person to person, so why one person may not get on with one drug it may turn out to be suitable for another and because of this when first prescribed drugs by a Doctor, there may be a period of trial and error before the right drug is found that suits each individual.
These drugs that get used for anxiety and panic are not really a permanent cure, they may suppress the symptoms and might even stop the actual attacks, but they are not a long term solution, the need to find out the reason for the condition in the first place still needs to be addressed and only then can the problem be eliminated.
