How to Modify a Van to Handicapped Accessible
- 1). Install a seat lift installed for individuals who are able to transfer from a wheelchair to a lowered seat. The lift lowers and rotates so the person can transfer to the van seat and be lifted into place ready to drive.
- 2). Install a lift or ramp to get a wheelchair into the van. These extend out from the side or back door allowing the disabled person to maneuver the wheelchair into the van.
- 3). Install a driver side transfer seat for a handicap accessible vans. These power adjustable seats provide maximum entry and exit space within the van. This extra space allows those who would not be able to get into a driver's seat to do so while inside the van.
- 4). Install a hydraulic lift. This type of lift will mechanically lift a scooter or wheelchair into the handicapped accessible van.
- 1). Bring the van into a certified dealer to have hand controls installed. The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) will help you find the correct modifications. See Resource 1.
- 2). Detect high decibel sounds, like sirens, by installing a siren detector in the van. This allows individuals who are hearing impaired to safely drive.
- 3). Install a custom steering device. Knobs, tri-pin, steering cuff, palm grip, amputee ring, and floor mounted steering are among the available options.
- 4). Install a pedal extender. This apparatus will raise the brakes and accelerator pedals for wheelchair accessibility.
