How to Prevent Night Terrors
- 1). Destimulate the mind before sleep. Avoid violent, fantastical or fear-based media one to two hours prior to bed. This includes television, radio, literature and "ghost stories".
- 2). Establish a meditation routine. Meditate for ten to thirty minutes prior to bed.
- 3). Resolve conflict, anxiety or frustration before going to sleep. Journal, talk to a spouse or friend, or meditate to lessen aggression and feelings of anger before going to sleep. Drink a cup of warm tea or milk to subside any physical manifestations these feelings of hostility may have caused within the body.
- 4). Consult your physician. Document the frequency of incidence and determine a plan of action. Consider alternative medicines, herbal remedies, and over the counter medicines.
- 5). Ask for help. Ask a loved one or sibling who shares a room or bed with the sufferer to wake the person during an attack. Ask a lover or family member to comfort the sufferer after an attack if he cannot be calmly awoken during the attack.
