If you are planning a 30th reunion in 2010, it means you'll need to tap into trends of the early 1980s. During the '80s, you met a movie date to watch Caddyshack or Fame, rocked out to cassette tapes of Madonna, Blondie, Elton John or slow danced to Captain and Tennille. The phone you talked on for hours had a cord and leg warmers were in. Tap into your memory banks and begin your planning. - Dance to music that stirs memories of 30 years ago.disco image by SemA from Fotolia.com
The music for a 30th reunion sets the theme for the party. Let the songs played by a disk jockey trigger fond memories of the early 1980s. Schedule a mix of slow and fast songs by groups and singers popular to the time. Mix in a little punk from The Germs, some top 10 hits with Stevie Wonder and Madonna, or celebrate the end years of Disco dancing to Donna Summer. A slow dance to the "The Rose" by Better Midler is a must. - Your school mascot or colors can appear in your reunion decorating theme.mascot image by Clarence Alford from Fotolia.com
While the disco ball was still seen in 1980s dance clubs, it's been overused for retro reunions. A couple of sewing or window mannequins standing around in conversation groups can serve as conversation pieces and decorations by modeling 1980s clothes. Bring on the leg warmers, fingerless gloves, blazers with exaggerated shoulder pads, oversized tees or the fancy cocktail dresses of the 1980s television hit "Dallas." You can ask participants to search their attics for clothes or check for 1980s attire on auction sites. Frame pages copied from old yearbooks with school colors and place them in groups on the tables. These will serve as icebreakers for attendees that have not seen each other in three decades and will suit a budget for any affair. Place school-colored cheer pom-poms on each table as a center piece in lieu of flowers. - Baked brie was in vogue in 1980.cheese image by AGITA LEIMANE from Fotolia.com
While it's perfectly appropriate to serve current cocktail or dinner party food at the reunion, serving food that was popular in the 1980s adds a fun touch to the event. According to Kim Severson of the New York Times' Fickle Palate column, sophisticated 1980s fare included wheels of brie baked with sliced apples and cubed food cooked in a fondue pot, a cooking method that has been out so long that it's in again. Fresh pastas were sans red sauce and perky with pesto. Spinach salad replaced the lettuce wedge, which by the way is another food that is back on the "in" list. Choose food that sets the mood. The cocktail wiener may rule the reunion.
