Bugs Are Flying in My House

    Insecticides

    • Insecticide sprays are usually one of the first methods people turn to when they want a quick fix. There are numerous sprays that can instantly kill flying insects, but if there's a large population in your house, you may have to resort to a fogger. A fogger fills your home with insecticide that dissipates after a few hours, but not before killing many of the flying and other insects. Foggers will only kill the flying insects currently in your home, however, and will do little to deter future infestations.

    Fly Paper

    • Fly paper is a strip of paper that is coated with a very powerful adhesive. These strips hang from ceilings or walls and attract flying insects, which land upon them and get stuck, eventually dying. Fly paper is effective at keeping flying insect populations in check and should be placed near entrance points in your home, such as near doors or windows. As effective as they are, they are unfortunately not very aesthetically appealing, often filling up with the corpses of dead insects over the course of a few days, requiring constant replacement.

    Citronella

    • Citronella is a plant that has a scent known to repel many flying insects, including gnats and mosquitoes. Using a citronella candle creates a perimeter around the burn, keeping these insects away. Citronella also comes in sprays, which can fill your home with the repelling scent of the plant.

    Prevention

    • The most effective way of controlling flying insects in your home is to prevent them altogether. Keep windows closed and, if they must be open, make sure that the bug screen is tight and secure. The same goes for sliding doors. Also make sure to take your garbage out regularly, as rotting food and plants will attract a variety of flying insects such as gnats and flies.
