How to Plant Brown Top Millet
- 1). Locate a suitable spot for the food plot that will attract all manner of wildlife, including pheasants, dove, quail, rabbits, deer and even bugs, which in turn attract other bug-eating creatures. A good spot to begin preparing soil is by a hedgerow, fencerow or beside woodland to offer cover when wildlife feel the urge to hide.
- 2). Brown top millet is well adapted to sandy-loam soils with a pH range of between 5 and 6.5. Make certain the soil in the food plot matches these recommendations to ensure a good crop.
- 3). Buy 25 to 30 lbs. of brown top millet seed per acre if you plan on broadcasting the seed on the soil of your prepared food plot. Drilling the seed will take only 15 to 20 lbs. of seed per acre. Seeds should be sown at a depth of 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
- 4). Normal average rainfall should take care of watering requirements to enable the grass to reach optimum growth. In the meantime, as the grass grows, it attracts more wildlife with the cover it affords.
- 5). Note that plants are mature at 60 days from germination when seed heads are full. Yield should be between 3 and 4 tons per acre.
