The Hazards of Unsecured Wireless
- Leaving your home wireless connection unsecured allows someone outside your home to gain access to your Internet connection. Although this unauthorized access may not pose a threat to the computers on your network, it may result in slower Internet browsing and download speeds. In addition, if your Internet service provider charges for actual use versus a flat rate, you are responsible for the intruder's usage. These fees can add up quickly if the intruder uses your connection to download music or video files.
- An intruder that gains access to your unsecured wireless network also may have access to the information on your computers. Once inside, the intruder can review the files on your drives and potentially install software that captures your username and passwords for email and other accounts. This leaves not only your email and FTP accounts vulnerable, but you also risk exposing personal information including tax and other financial records. The intruder then can use this information to steal your identity.
- In addition to stealing personal information, intruders can use your unsecured wireless connection to launch malicious attacks, distribute illegal material such as child pornography or hack into other secure and unsecure systems. Because this activity takes place from your Internet connection, this activity traces back to you. Most Internet service providers will disclose your information to law enforcement personnel investigating these potential crimes. As a result, you may be liable for whatever criminal activity the hacker performs from your connection. Many of these offenses have punishments that include fines and even jail time.
- Some corporate and government employees use personal computers and laptops to gain access to business networks. Typically, the employee uses a Virtual Private Network connection to gain access to his work network. A savvy hacker can gain unauthorized access to the employee's business network through this same VPN connection. This leaves company information and resources exposed to malicious attacks and theft.
