How Does Windows Media Player Work?

23

    Movie Files

    • Windows Media Player will play most movie file formats. The default file format for Windows Media Player is WMA, but it can play AVI, MPG and a host of other movie files. An additional codec may need to be downloaded to play a specific file type or format. This can be done by checking for updates to Windows Media Player or installing a separate codec, such as the K-lite Codec Pack.

    Audio Files

    • Windows Media Player will play most audio files except those AAC encoded files that are used with the Apple iPod. Windows Media Player can also be used to burn MP3 files from an audio CD. Click the "Rip" button to select the format type and if a CD should be ripped automatically when it is inserted into the drive.

    Library

    • The Windows Media Player has a Movie as well as a Music Library. The Library is used to organize video or music that can be burned to a CD or DVD disk. Adding files to the Library can be done by clicking the "Library" button and selecting "Add to Library" from the menu.

    Portable Devices

    • Portable music devices, such as the Zune, can be synced with Windows Media Player to transfer or play audio and video files. Connect a portable music device to the computer and open Windows Media Player. If the program does not automatically start to sync with the device, click on the "Sync" button to start the process.
