Preventing Ice Build Up on a Roof
- 1). Increase the insulation in your attic space and seal any spaces where air can flow from the house into the attic space. Hire a qualified contractor to assist you with properly installing insulation and sealing spaces.
- 2). Remove snow from the roof with a roof rake, push broom or snow shovel. Use a ladder to access all sides of your house and look for areas of snow accumulation.
- 3). Fill one leg from an old pair of pantyhose with calcium chloride snow melt to deal with any ice. Place the pantyhose across the ice and allow it to sit until the ice melts, typically 12 to 24 hours. Remove the pantyhose after the ice melts. Use the pantyhose anytime you see ice forming.
