How To Make A Difference In The Bedroom
'So we, in our house, are the proud owners of a new fitted bedroom. I wouldn't normally be motivated to put pen to paper on the subject of bedroom design - or fitted bedroom furniture for that matter - but the whole experience has been such an eye-opener that I thought people deserved to know. It may be that you don't think fitted furniture is for you. I certainly didn't. It may well also be that you're reluctant to invest the extra time, effort and, being honest, cash in your bedroom furniture. I have to confess that I wasn't madly enthusiastic about the project as we set out. I was wrong. The difference it has made in the bedroom is nothing short of astonishing.
I'm told that I spend a third of my life in bed. I suppose that makes sense if I think about it (though it certainly doesn't feel like it some weeks!). That makes it an important room in my life. It has to be a room where I feel comfortable, and at rest. I thought it was that before, but fitted bedroom furniture has made much more of the space in the bedroom available, which means I feel like there's less mess, less clutter. As I say, both my partner and I thought we were doing fine with our bedroom furniture, which is the usual (I imagine) mixture of pieces of furniture that have been inherited from other bedrooms and other houses and a few pieces that have been bought recently. Our bedroom definitely included furniture (mentioning no names) that I had assembled myself. That was fine, but let me tell you that the alternative, with furniture fitted to the bedroom, and matching our design, is a different world.
We started with a bedroom design. I admit I thought this might be unnecessary, and that it was tending towards making our bedroom into a hotel room. I was wrong about that, too, as the most useful person we spoke to was the joiner who would ultimately be making the furniture and fitting it into the bedroom. He was informative and honest about the space that fitted furniture can save in a room, and he was keen to work together with us to create something we could agree on. The design aspects came easily in the end, as we were using the same natural material throughout, and because the furniture was fitted exactly to the bedroom's dimensions, it couldn't help but look clean and elegant.
The next thing that I was impressed with was the quality of the finished article. As I've already confessed, I'm no stranger to the flat-pack and its many joys. Being able to see the process of genuine bespoke furniture as it was fitted has turned me against the shelves I've assembled over the years. I feel guilty about that (some of the flat-pack furniture has been long-serving and faithful), but it's relegated to the shed these days. It makes such a difference to know that our fitted furniture will last and last. Both of us feel like the bedroom furniture is a problem solved, and there's a peace of mind that comes with that.
Fitted bedroom furniture might not be for everybody. If it suits you to create your perfect bedroom from an eclectic mix of reclaimed pieces of furniture, then don't let our experience sway you. I just thought people should know that our experience was nothing but positive - that our new fitted bedroom furniture is a daily joy, and that I don't regret for a moment our decision to have it done...'
