    • 1). Place 10 ounces of marshmallows and 3 tablespoons of margarine in the large pot. Place 5 ounces of marshmallows and 1 1/2 tablespoons or margarine in each of the smaller pots. Place the pots on appropriate-size burners over medium heat.

    • 2). Follow the directions on the food coloring box to create the following colors: pink, red, light green, dark green and brown. Place one color mixture in each of the small pots.

    • 3). Stir the mixtures with the spatulas until the margarine and marshmallows are completely melted.

    • 4). Measure and pour 6 cups of Rice Krispies into the large pot. Measure and pour 3 cups of Rice Krispies into each of the smaller pots. Stir the contents of each pot until the Rice Krispies are completely covered with the margarine and marshmallow mixture.

    • 5). Lay the large piece of cardboard on a flat surface. Dump the contents of the large pot onto the cardboard. Form the mixture into an irregular, oval shape with a flat top using your hands and a spatula. This will form the cytoplasm of the cell.

    • 6). Remove small amounts of the dark green mixture from the pot and form a border around the edges of the cytoplasm using your hands and a spatula. Make the border uniformly thick while still leaving approximately 1/2 cup of mixture in the pot. This is the cell wall.

    • 7). Remove the pink mixture from the pot and form a long, flat, oval shape. Place the shape on top of the cytoplasm making sure that none of the edges touch the vacuole.

    • 8). Divide the brown mixture into three portions and form each portion into flat, irregular, oval shapes. Place the shapes on a flat surface and use a butter knife to cut squiggles inside of the shapes. Remove the cut area and place the shapes on top of the cytoplasm making sure that none of the edges touch the other cell components. These shapes are mitochondrias.

    • 9). Divide the light green mixture into six portions and form flat, irregular, oval shapes. Place the shapes on top of the cytoplasm making sure that none of the edges touch the other cell components. Place one or two grains of the dark green mixture on top of the shapes to make them look polka dotted. These shapes are chloroplasts.

Divide the red mixture in half. Form one flat, irregular, circle shape with the first portion. Place the shape on a flat surface and use a butter knife to cut seven circles out of the shape. Remove the cut areas and place the shape on top of the cytoplasm making sure that none of the edges touch the other cell components. Divide the remaining portion into 11 pieces. Form each piece into a flattened, curved tube and position each piece around the red circle. This is the cell nucleus.

Follow the directions on the food coloring box to create a small amount of brown in a bowl. Dip the tip of the butter knife into the color and dot the knife on the model between the cell wall and cytoplasm to form a dashed line. This dotted line will represent the cell membrane.
