Caius Marius Profile

Caius Marius (aka Marius or Gaius Marius) was a remarkable Roman leader. Not only did he rise from obscurity to reach the highest office, but he attained it a record-breaking seven times. He married into the family of Julius Caesar. During his illustrious career, Caius Marius and his erstwhile subordinate Sulla almost tore Rome apart with their rivalry. For Marius' reforms of the Roman military, ordinary foot soldiers were known as Marius' mules.
