Canada announced New Skilled Trades Program
Every country wants to improve its immigration system. Recently, Citizenship and Immigration Canada announced a new skilled trades program to fill the labour shortages in various industries like construction, natural resources etc. New skilled trades program is announced for the skilled tradespersons, so that they can easily migrate to Canada.
Immigration minister Jason Kenny believes that this new program transform Canada's immigration system into a fast and flexible system focused on jobs, growth and prosperity. He also said that the government knows the crucial shortage that the country is faced with in certain skilled areas that is why it is taking specific steps to solve the problem nationally.
Kenney said criteria required to enter Canada under the existing program put trades people at a disadvantage because the rules are geared toward professionals. Professionals take more advantage of the current system than the tradespersons.
According to the Federal Skilled Worker Program which is the current system, applicants are evaluated against a grid of 100 points in which applicants needs 67 points to pass. The grid contains the official language ability means the applicant must be language proficient, work experience, education and age of the candidate and the information related to work for which applicant came to Canada.
Several criteria in the grid like the years of education used to favor managers and professionals over skilled workers. As a result, the latter consists only 3% of the entire Federal Skilled Workers in Canada immigration. During last year's consultation of Citizenship and Immigration Canada on the modernization of the Federal Skilled Worker Program, stakeholders agreed that it is important to bring the changes in order for more tradespersons to access the program.
The proposed program of the Federal Skilled Worker Program for skilled trades will give them a chance to be evaluated according to criteria that emphasizes work experience and practical training instead of formal education. The latest stream will get rid of several complexities of the traditional grid. But, applicants of the skilled trades will have to meet the minimum language requirements considering that it is important to determine the success of the immigrant and to settle in canada.
