How to Level an Indoor Dirt Floor

29
    • 1). Break up mounds and clumps of dirt on the floor using a hoe. Chop the dirt as small as possible. As you break up the dirt, move the hoe up and down across the broken-up dirt to spread it around evenly. Repeat this process to make the dirt as evenly textured as possible.

    • 2). Rake the entire floor using a standard metal garden rake moving in a vertical, up and down motion. This distributes the dirt evenly across the floor and further breaks apart any clumping.

    • 3). Lay a carpenter's level onto the dirt floor to determine whether the floor is level and even. Take measurements around the entire room. If the floor is still not level, repeat the entire process until it is.

    • 4). Tamp the entire floor using a dirt tamper. Lift the tamper up to chest level, then drop it directly down onto the floor. Keep the tamper parallel to the floor as you tamp the dirt. This flattens and compacts the dirt, preparing it for the installation of a different type of flooring.
