2-Way Google Syncing on the iPhone

23

    Setting Up Google Sync

    • To set up Google Sync, you'll need to launch the "Settings" application on your iPhone. Tap the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" button. Tap "Add Account," and select "Microsoft Exchange" from the list of available services. Enter your Google account email address in the "Email" and "Username" boxes, and your password in the "Password" box. Tap the "Next" button, followed by "Cancel" when the "Unable to Verify Certificate" dialog box appears. Type "m.google.com" into the new "Server" box that has appeared on the "Exchange" page, and then tap the "Next" button. The account will be verified this time, and your iPhone and Google account are now linked together.

    Mail, Contacts, Calendars

    • Once the link has been established between your iPhone and Google account, you can determine which aspects will be synchronized between them. The final page of the "Exchange" setup procedure displays three switches. Slide the "Mail" switch to "On" if you want to sync email between the iPhone and the Google account. Switching "Contacts" on will synchronize your Google account's Contacts list and the iPhone's Contacts application. Turning the "Calendars" switch on will sync your Google accounts calendars with the iPhone's native "Calendar" application.

    Making Changes and Synchronizing

    • Once you've determined which aspects of the iPhone and Google account will be synchronized, any changes you make will automatically be reflected across the account. For example, if you add an appointment to the iPhone's Calendar application, that appointment will also appear in the calendar in your Google account. This process is automatic, and a synchronization is performed whenever a change is made or the iPhone application is launched. The only requirement is that the iPhone is connected to the Internet, so it can send -- or receive -- the relevant data.

    Additional Options

    • You aren't restricted to syncing a single iPhone to your Google account. By repeating the set-up procedure on another iOS device -- such as an iPod touch, iPad or another iPhone -- you can automatically and seamlessly synchronize the calendars, address books and email accounts between all devices. You can also administer changes across all devices by logging into your Google account on any computer's web browser, and making changes and additions to the relevant applications. These changes will be synced the next time the app is launched on the linked iPhone, or other iOS devices.
