How to Become a Shaolin Monk
- 1). Your body must possess a certain amount of agility and be completely in synch. When you move, be it a simple step or a concerted run, your hand should also have a similar and like-minded movement.
- 2). The energy of the body, or chi, must flow freely through you, allowing the warrior within to move and act aggressively.
- 3). You must understand and observe the five elements of nature and how they interact with each other. During a fight, these elements should come together and be in harmony. This will add strength to the body and improve combat.
- 4). You must understand the theory of ba tiao where again you learn to make swift and coordinated movements during combat. As you go through life, you must always be ready to engage in battle with an enemy. They can appear out of anywhere, and you must be prepared to defend yourself from all sides.
- 5). Your movements must be measured and calculated. It is believed making a number of smaller movements that are thoughtful and correct is better than making one movement that is unmindful and inaccurate.
- 6). During combat, your enemy should never be able to anticipate your movements. If they are able to predict your punches, a fight can quickly move from offensive to defensive. Every jab should almost be a surprise.
- 7). The mind should be your greatest weapon in combat. Connecting the mind with your body allows a warrior to move smoothly and naturally. Your reactions are quick, your arms are accurate, and your legs are precise. Everything works in agreement with each other.
- 8). You should never allow your opponent a chance to regroup. Take every opportunity to bring them down. As they move faster and more careless, use this to your advantage.
- 9). Your eyes, ears and heart should be unified. Watch your opponent’s every move, hear your opponent’s every move and feel your opponent’s every move.

Never waste your movements. A simple tick of a finger is a waste of energy. Keep yourself poised and ready to act, not moving around in hopes of acting.
